A cult hotel for Phibsborough — the refurbishment of a 1960s Brutalist tower, above the village that has quietly become one of Dublin’s most characterful places to live.
The hotel
A cult hotel in a 1960s tower.
The building is the reason we are here. A 1960s office block in board-marked concrete, with a deep grid of windows and the kind of unfashionable confidence nobody builds with any more. It has been called an eyesore for most of its life. Look at it at dusk, when the grid lights up floor by floor, and you will see what we saw.
We are refurbishing rather than replacing: keeping the frame, keeping the rhythm of the facade, and doing the work where it counts — insulation, glazing, acoustics, and rooms that make a virtue of the concrete rather than hiding it behind plasterboard. Brutalist bones, and a warm interior that stops it ever feeling severe.
Downstairs, Bar Phizz and a restaurant that face the street and stay open late. Music matters here — this is a neighbourhood that has produced more bands than it has any right to, and the programme will reflect that. Upstairs, rooms with the best north-city views in Dublin, because a tower is good for exactly one thing.
