The bones of Bolton Street
Three hundred years of coach-builders, cabinetmakers and printers. What we are keeping, and why.
The first thing we did on Bolton Street was stop and look at what was already there. Brick laid in Flemish bond. Granite kerbs worn into shallow dips by two centuries of cartwheels. Cast-iron columns holding up a floor that was never meant to be pretty.
The temptation with a building like this is to strip it back to a clean shell and start again. We are doing the opposite. The plaster stays honest. The columns stay visible. The floor keeps its scars.
What we are adding is quiet: proper acoustic separation, heavy curtains, warm low light, and the kind of ironmongery that feels good in the hand and gets better with ten thousand uses.
